There’s the observation that every decade extends slightly into the next, in the way that the way the ’80s didn’t really quit until 1991. I suppose that’s why I always thought this was a ’60s song, though I should have known better—the instrumental is Delfonics-esque, the sort of ’70s groove that is both spangled and reptile. I think it’s because Cuba Gooding, Sr.’s voice is the exact kind of Motown crystalline.
